Womens football is gradually gaining grounds in the northern region of Ghana. With three (3) premier league clubs, ten (10) division One clubs, about 10 division 2 clubs and over 20 division 3 clubs across the length and breadth of the region.

Northern Women’s football is now a deriving force and a pace setter for other regions. There’s no single women’s national team in the country that do not have atleast five players from the northern region.

One of the famous towns in Ghana and the second largest in the region after Tamale is Yendi, the heart of Dagbon and the capital of the Yendi Constituency. With all the women clubs across various divisions mentioned above, none was from the Dagbon capital in the previous seasons.

Defying the odds.

It has been a worrying issue for football people in the Municipality, infact a night mare, who spends days and nights to make sure that aged old narrative is changed and put to an end.

MVP Awards

For this reason the chairman of the womens committee of the Yendi municipal football association who also serves as the vice Chairman of the Regional womens committee, Mohammed Andani Awii together with his team managed to defy the odds by organizing a four clubs women’s division 3 league, which started on the 29th of October 2022 across four match venues and is currently underway.

Public sentiments about the league.

For many in the Constituency it’s a life time achievement for the organizers, something they have been longing for years to have. They view it as a good intervention which could go along way to help the young girls advance their footballing career and also help them and their families financially in the not too distant future.

How people troop in to match venues to watch and cheer the girls up has been mesmerizing. With this unprecedented attendances to watch this games, there seems to be little difference between the men’s league and the Women’s league in terms of fans attendance.

Many also believed that the display of the girls in the opening week of the league has changed their misconception about the girls incapabilities to play football well.

With the success chocked in the first four matches of the league, it’s currently the talk across all media stations in the region and hopefully will even travelled beyond the shores of the region in the coming coming weeks.
