Welbeck scores as Brighton beat Manchester United in their own backyard
Brighton pulled off a stunning upset as they defeated Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday. Former United striker Danny Welbeck scored the opener in the 20th minute to give Brighton the lead. Pascal CroB made it two on the 53rd minute while Joao Pedro sealed it with the 3rd goal on the 71st minute. Manchester United had a consolation goal from the foot of Hannibal Mejbri on the 73rd minute.
The game was evenly poised in the second half, with both teams creating chances. United had more possession and shots, but Brighton defended well and looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Welbeck proved to be the hero for Brighton, as he scored against his former club.
Welbeck celebrated his goal with a muted gesture, showing respect to his former fans. He had spent nine years at United, scoring 29 goals in 142 appearances, before leaving for Arsenal in 2014. He joined Brighton on a free transfer in October 2022 and has scored four goals in 12 games for them.
The final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation among the Brighton players and staff, who celebrated their first win at Old Trafford since 2009. United manager Erik Ten Hag looked dejected as he walked off the pitch, knowing that his team had missed a chance to close the gap on Manchester City, who are nine points ahead.
