UEFA: Real Madrid defeats Liverpool to win the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League
Real Madrid have won their 14th European Cup title on Saturday evening in Paris after defeating Liverpool 1-0.
The game was delayed by over half an hour to allow Liverpool fans get access to the stadium.
When the game finally started, it was Jürgen Klopp’s side who took the initiative, with Jordan Henderson closing down Thibaut Courtois and nearly blocking the Belgian goalkeeper’s pass into the net.
On 20 minutes, Courtois made a good save of the day when his outstretched right palm diverted a Sadio Mané shot into the post.
Los Blancos gradually regained control of the game, and on the stroke of halftime, they thought they had scored.
Karim Benzema pounced on a defensive blunder, but his close-range strike was finally ruled offside following a lengthy VAR review.
Luis Daz appeared to grab on to a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold pass early in the second half, almost putting Liverpool ahead.
Dani Carvajal, on the other hand, arrived just in time and headed clear, the Colombian international inches away from a goal.
Vinicius Jnr snuck in at the far post and bundled in a Fede Valverde cross to break the deadlock on the hour mark for the Spanish side.
Real’s first attempt on target of the game didn’t matter because Liverpool was now going all out to get the equalizer.
The game dragged on in the closing 15 minutes as Jürgen Klopp’s team did everything they could to score.
They couldn’t find their shooting boots, however, as Real Madrid clung to their European title.
