The project was expected to be complete within 9- months of it’s commencement but a visit by sportsmrnews.com team to the work site revealed that there are still a lot to be done.

The project forms part of the Akuffo Addo led government efforts to address the sports infrastructure deficit in the country. There are similar projects in other Regions for which many have been completed.

The facility is a $1.8m project and will house a FIFA standard football pitch, 8-lane athletic oval, an ICT hub, Counseling centres, Tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, modern restaurant, washrooms, floodlights, 40-metre long jump runway and spectator stands for both popular and VIP.

The over 5,000 seater multi-purpose sports complex when finished will help in the development of sports in the Eastern Corridor Zone and Yendi in particular. The Yendi town currently has Seven Division Two clubs with Yendi Gbewaa FC in the Division One League.

It also has about five Volleyball Clubs in the Yendi township with several of their products playing in the National Volleyball League.

The absence of a Standard Football Pitch in Yendi has forced Gbewaa FC to use the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale as their home venue, which has affected their performance in the Division One League.

The Sports Complex when completed will also serve as a source of employment for many of the youth. There has been calls by sports enthusiast in the Yendi Municipality to look into the matter and make sure the facility get completed before the end of the year, as it has become a serious canker to the Football fraternity.
