The former Northern Regional Referees Instructor, former Chairman of RAG, N/R and retired FIFA referee, Haruna Awuba has urged the general public who are into the game of football to speak for the referees since many referees in Ghana are suffering in relation to thier salaries. According to him, refereeing is a very tidious and life treatening job which must be recognized as such.
Mr Haruna Awuba is one of the best Referees Northern Region has produced in the past. He is one of the few referees to have made it to the greater height. He set record for himself as one of the referees who officiated in two different CAF champions league semi-final matches in Egypt and Sudan respectively.
The retired FIFA referee, Ayuba in his Refereeing job was able to acquire Diploma certificate in Refereeing in 2005 and also got Referees Instructors’ Certificate from Netherland. He was also awarded an International Coaching Certificate, ICC from Lebanon which is equivalent to UEFA licence B.
He joined RAG IN 1990 and in 1994 started officiating Division one league matches. He got into Premier League in 1998 with a class 2 certificate as an assistant referee because of his hard work, and in 2002, he got his FIFA badge. He became the second referee from Northern Region to get a FIFA badge. Late Referee Ibrahim Iddrisu known as Referee Marshall was the first referee in Northern Region to get a FIFA batch.
The leison officer for referees in CAN 2008 in Ghana, Referee Ayuba officiated a number CAF Champions league matches, he was in Angola 2012, the first CHAN competition in 2011 and was among the referees selected for the FIFA U-20 World Cup which Ghana won the final match against Brazil.
Referee Ayuba has always been an inspiration to the up and coming referees.
This visionary referee during his days as Regional instructor and Regional chairman of RAG instituted the “Catch them Young Referee policy” which today is adopted by the GFA. He moved from the basic schools to SHS to recruite young referees into the association. Some of those he recuitted have become rennound referees in the Region.
“Let your integrity be intact as a referee and anytime you recommend anybody to the top, they will listen to you, he said”.
“The current young referees are not getting the needed corrections because they will not ask questions about their performance after handling matches and when you want to talk to them about their mistakes in a match, they get angry. He added”.
He was however grateful to all those who supported him espercially Referee Afa Seidu and all the Imams in Northern Region.
