John Stones scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Manchester City against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, propelling City to the top of the Premier League table.

Wolves took an early lead through Jorgen Strand Larsen, who tapped in at the back post after just seven minutes, capping off a well-executed team move. However, City equalized just before halftime with a spectacular strike from Josko Gvardiol from the edge of the box.

Despite Wolves’ resolute defense, which featured a tactical switch to a back five, it seemed they would hold on for a point. But in the dying seconds, Stones rose highest to convert a corner, clinching all three points for Pep Guardiola’s side.

With this win, City leapfrogged Liverpool to sit two points clear at the top of the table, while Wolves, despite an improved performance, remain second from bottom with just one point from their opening eight fixtures.

This match marked the fifth time in seven Premier League games that City has come from behind. They now hold a league-high 13 points recovered from losing positions this season, extending their remarkable record of avoiding defeat in the last 12 league matches when trailing.

For much of the match, it looked as if City might settle for a draw, as Wolves successfully limited their chances. Jose Sa, filling in for the injured Sam Johnstone, made crucial saves to keep the hosts ahead until the late stages.

Following Stones’ goal, there was a VAR check for a potential offside involving Bernardo Silva, but the on-field decision stood, leading to frustration for Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, who received a booking for his protests.

Wolves will look to build on this performance as they face Brighton next, while City will turn their attention to a Champions League clash with Sparta Prague before hosting Southampton in the Premier League next weekend.
