“It’s disrespectful to give me GHC5,000 voucher to visit dendist as Ghana Premier League top scorer” – Abednego Tetteh
Abednego Tetteh expressed his disappointment with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for awarding him a GHc5,000 voucher to visit the dentist as his prize for winning the Golden Boot in the last season’s Ghana Premier League.
Tetteh, aged 32, had an impressive season, scoring 18 goals to help Bibiani Gold Stars secure a fifth-place finish in the league. He faced tough competition from Hafiz Konkoni of Bechem United and Sampson Eduku of Tamale City for the Golden Boot, but emerged victorious with his 18 goals, while Konkoni had 15 and Eduku 14.
However, Tetteh found the dentist voucher a disrespectful reward for his achievement, saying, “The GFA gave me a GHC5,000 voucher to visit a dentist as my GPL goal king prize. I won’t lie, I’m really hurt. How can you give me GHC5,000 to go to a dentist just to wash my mouth, which to me is very disrespectful?”
He also mentioned that he turned down the opportunity to renew his contract with Bibiani Gold Stars, stating, “I don’t want to win the GPL goal king and get disrespected like this again.”
Tetteh further questioned the discrepancy in rewards, noting that the best referee received a car, and the best player received GHC20,000 and a television. He expressed his dissatisfaction by saying, “The best referee received a car and the best player received GHC20,000 and a television, and I, being the top scorer, would have appreciated it if they gave me GHC10 airtime rather than the GHC5,000 voucher.”
In light of these disappointments, Tetteh recently announced his temporary retirement from football after not being included in the Black Stars squad this month.
