In a recent seminar on Legal Matters in Sports held in Accra on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie, emphasized the crucial role of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in maintaining the integrity of football leagues. Representing the Sports Minister, Hon. Bobie urged the GFA to consistently provide fair hearings to clubs involved in legal disputes to prevent unnecessary delays in league proceedings.

Addressing the gathering organized by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bobie stressed the importance of clubs and players being well-informed about the legal intricacies of football. He pointed out instances where clubs took matters directly to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) without exhausting internal dispute resolution channels.

One key aspect highlighted was the significance of transparency in player contracts. Hon. Bobie encouraged both players and clubs to pay careful attention to contract details, citing instances where confusion arose between parties. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity for clubs to accurately report international proceeds from player sales to ensure the correct deductions by the FA.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister urged the GFA to expedite the release of International Transfer Certificates (ITC) to clubs. This, he noted, would facilitate swift processing of player transfers for foreign deals, contributing to the efficiency of the football ecosystem.

In addressing concerns about age cheating, Hon. Bobie underlined its adverse effects, citing a specific case involving the Ghana National Girls U-17 team. He called for robust measures to prevent a recurrence, emphasizing that maintaining the integrity of age categories is paramount for the future of Ghanaian football.

In conclusion, the Deputy Youth and Sports Minister’s message resonated with the need for a collaborative effort between football authorities, clubs, and players to uphold the legal standards of the sport. By ensuring fair hearings, promoting transparency in contracts, and addressing issues promptly, the GFA can play a pivotal role in fostering a healthy and competitive football environment in Ghana.
