The 2022/23 season is almost over as the Spanish La Liga counts down to only five games to go after matchday 33.

However, FC Barcelona are just one win away from lifting this season’s La Liga trophy as Real Madrid lost 2:0 to fourth placed Real Sociedad just after the Catalans secured a slim 1:0 win over Osasuna on Tuesday night.

Jordi Alba’s 85th minute late strike secured all three points for the Blaugranas, who are now leading by 14 points after Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost to Imanol Alguacil’s.

Third placed Atletico Madrid hosts Cadiz FC at the Estadio Metropolitano on Wednesday as matchday 33 continues. A win for the hosts will place them second on the league table, 13 points behind leaders Barcelona and 1 point ahead of Ancelotti’s side with only 5 games to go.

THE ANALYSIS:

FC Barcelona will visit the RCDE Stadium on matchday 34 for an “El derbi barceloní” match against neighbouring rivals RCD Espanyol on Sunday. The Periquitos will be set to fight their way out of relegation, whereas the Azulgranas will ready themselves to lift their 27th La Liga title and Xavi’s first as the club’s manager.

A win on Sunday for Xavi’s side will tally their points to 85, 16 more than Atletico Madrid if [Atletico] wins on Wednesday against Cadiz and 17 than Real Madrid with only five(5) matches more for the later teams.

However, wins in all the remaining five matches can only accrue up to 15 points which wouldn’t be enough for either the Colchoneros or Los Blancos to break the Catalans.

Therefore, only a draw or a loss can deprive FC Barcelona of being crowned La Liga champions this Sunday.

The two sides have met 32 times in all competitions including friendlies since 2010. Espanyol have only managed three(3) wins and nine(9) draws whereas FC Barcelona have won twenty(20) times.

The Barcelona derby between RCD Espanyol and FC Barcelona this Sunday will be a very important win for the Super League champions, even though both teams have a fair chance of winning. Who do you think will win this match…?
