Coach Mohammed Abukari Aquaye Resigns as Head Coach of Tamale Steadfast FC
Coach Mohammed Abukari, popularly known in football circles as Coach Aquaye, has officially stepped down from his role as Head Coach of Tamale Steadfast FC, a Division Two League side.
In a statement confirming his departure, Coach Aquaye cited his inability to secure promotion to the Division One League as the primary reason behind his resignation. Steadfast FC narrowly missed out on promotion after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sankara Nationals FC in their final qualification match.
“I made a promise to the club and its supporters that I would lead the team back to Division One, but unfortunately, I couldn’t fulfill that promise. As such, I have taken the decision to step aside,” Coach Aquaye explained.
Coach Aquaye has been an integral part of the club’s technical setup for many years, having served as Assistant Coach under various managers before being appointed Head Coach. His long-term dedication to Steadfast FC makes him arguably the longest-serving technical team member in the club’s history.
Steadfast FC, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Education, Hon. Lawyer Haruna Iddrisu, has seen turbulent times in recent seasons, including relegation from Division One last season. Their recent campaign showed promise, but the heartbreaking final loss dashed hopes of an immediate return to the higher division.
Although management was reportedly not pleased with his decision to resign, Coach Aquaye stated that they have accepted it with respect.
In the interim, assistant coach, Zakaria Tia would would take care of the club’s preparation towards next season until substantive coach is found.
