Club History: RTU is 47 years, Kudos to the Pride of the North – Dr Summertime Killer

Real Tamale United (RTU) was established on September 18, 1976, at the Victory Cinema Hall in Tamale. This club was born from the merger of two other clubs, namely Real Sportive and Northern United, which gave rise to Real Tamale United as a Division Two Club.

 

The Founding Fathers of RTU include notable personalities such as Alhaji Rahimu Gadamasi, Alhaji Bawa Alhassan Alolo, the late H.E. Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, the late Dr. Bawa Sampana, Mr. Jill Ashiru, Hon. Malik Alhassan Yakubu (Former MP for Yendi), Alhaji Aminu Zohe, Prof. Wayo Seini, the late Alhaji Adam Haruna Progress, the late Alhaji B. A Fuseini, Mr. Fuseini Mahama, Bawa Company (RIP), Haruna ONE ONE, the late Abdulai Shagbaa, the late Mallam Awudu Mei Tea, the late Nba Zuberu, the late Yaaro, Alhaji Ahmed, Fati Wangara, and Hayia Ayi.

 

Following its formation, the club participated in the novelty middle league in 1977 and successfully qualified for the Division ONE League, which is now known as the Premier League. RTU played a total of six matches and emerged victorious in five of them. This achievement earned them a spot in the 1978 League Season, where they finished third, just behind Hearts Hasaacas.

 

Alhaji Mohammed Choo emerged as the Top Scorer with an impressive 22 goals during that season.

 

Real Tamale United (RTU) boasts several significant achievements:

1. The club has produced the African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele, who won the prestigious award in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

2. Mohamed Gargo and Abu Iddrisu secured victories in the FIFA U17 Youth World Cups in 1991 and 1995, respectively.

3. Alhaji Mohammed Choo clinched Top Scorer Awards in both 1978 and 1982.

4. Anane Kobo also earned a Top Scorer Award in 1983.

5. RTU was a four-time losing finalist in the MTN FA Cup competition.

6. In 1998, RTU participated in Africa, facing off against Horoya Club of Guinea.

7. RTU had the honor of attending an invitational tournament in South Korea.

8. The club secured victory in a Special Competition in 2004.

9. RTU achieved second place in the Ghana Premier League on two occasions.
