“Catch them Young” is a policy of the Ghana Football Association which is aimed at developing young children who have the passion for refereeing to officiate our Juvenile leagues. This policy is currently being implemented by many Districts in the country.

The Juvenile (colts) leagues for the various Districts have started and it is expected that these referees be given the chance to officiate these matches. But the challenge for now is some Districts have not yet finish with program of impacting the needed knowledge onto the children to be able to officiate matches.

Interestingly, the Nanton Districts in the Northern Region have proven to mean business when it comes to training these young referees.

Four “Catch Them Young” referees from the Nanton District, in their quest to getting the practical understanding of the job, officiated Sallah Gala matches in the district. They are Alhassan Yahaya, Shaibu Mohammed, Alhassan Sulemana and Sulemana Abdul Razak. These young referees were under the guidance of Class 1 referees Adam Mohammed Kamil and Alhassan Saani all from the Regional capital.

This is worth commending and other Districts must emulate the leadership role played by the senior referees in order to develop these young boys.

Referees are an important Pilar in the game of Football and we must encourage more young children to take advantage of this policy.
