Barcelona to play Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey finals
Barcelona after their comeback on Wednesday against Sevilla advanced to the finals awaiting the winner between Levante and Athletic Bilbao the next day.
Levante went away and drew 1-1 against Bilbao, with the away point and a home advantage in the return fixture, it was believed that they could advance to the finals to play against the Catalans.
But after an tough battle, the game ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, which forced them to go for an additional 30 minutes. Unfortunately for Levante Alex Berenguer scored in 112 minutes to hand Athletic Bilbao a 2-1 victory which helped them to secure a 2-3 aggregate to qualify.
The win set up a rematch of the 2015 Copa Del Rey finals, which Barcelona won by 3-1. The two teams have played eight finals in the competition. Blaugranes have lifted the trophy six times to los leones two.
The last time the two sides met for the title was in a memorable final in 2015 played at Camp Nou that ended with Barça as champions with a 3-1 win.
In 2012 Barça defeated Athletic 3-0 in the Vicente Calderón in Madrid in the finals also.
They are the two most successful teams in this competition, with Barcelona winning it on 30 different occasions and Athletic Bilbao on 23 occasions, it will be worth noting that since 1984, Athletic has not been able to win the trophy.For Barcelona the last time they won the trophy was in 2018.
So this finals will be the ninth finals for the two clubs in this competition.
But Athletic Bilbao will be motivated by their Super cup finals win over the Catalans last two months, the Catalans will also be aware of the troubles they have had as a result of their failure to win the super cup.
